November Tip of the Month
Many of us constantly warn our children of the dangers of talking to strangers. "Don't talk to strangers" we say. Yet, when it comes to our computers, so few of us actually take our own advice. What can we do to help lock down our computers and prevent unwanted access to our data? Let's start with a couple, simple tips:

Don't open unsolicited emails. If you do not know the sender or did not expect to receive the message, don't open it.

Preview all messages in Plain Text mode. Will you miss the pretty graphics and HTML content from that LL Bean email ad? Yes. Will you prevent unwanted code from running you your system? Yes!!!

Be sure your antispyware/antivirus/antimalware solution includes email protection. If your current solution does not provide email scanning and protection, get one that does!

Run frequent, deep antimalware scans on your system. Nightly quick scans and weekly deep scans are a good way to be sure your system is clean; however, if your definitions are not up-to-date, it's a moot point. Be sure to update those as well. And finally,

Implement a good anti-spam solution. Whether hosted (on someone else's server) or a locally installed software solution, definitely do something to stem the tide of unwanted messages flowing into your inbox.

These are only a few options to consider in the overall security of the information on your computer and network. For more advice and assistance, be sure to give Guidant Partners Security Services a call and let us help you design and implement a good security policy. And remember,"Don't talk to strangers" applies to adults and computers too!
